Bad Date? 10 Games You Can Play On Your Mobile Without Anyone Noticing

We've all been there: boy meets girl, boy takes girl out for a drink, boy and girl make polite conversation... and sparks fail to fly. It's sad, but sometimes you just don't click with your date, and things can be a little awkward. So what is one to do? Well, if you're an iPhone user, the solution is simple. Read through our handy guide to the best games out there, and never feel that 'Oh God what do I say?!' tension again.

SPIDER: THE SECRET OF BRYCE MANOR: If you like mysteries, this one's for you. You're a spider living in the spooky Bryce Manor, whose family has just disappeared. Look for clues to decipher their disappearance or simply spend your time catching insects for food; and make sure to admire the beautiful graphics that go with the game.

CANABALT: For those who don't want to think too much, try this. In Canabalt, your character runs (of its own accord) across rooftops and you have to make him jump across the gaps. That's it. No gimmicks, no craftiness, just a nice, easy game to pass the time.

FIFA: Sports buffs will probably have this one already but it is the classic of iPhone sports games. Allowing you to work with real-life players, teams and football leagues, it also comes complete with audio commentary and many specialist techniques, and allows you to enter a range of different tournaments.

SNAKE: That most famous of the old-school mobile games, snake is compulsively addictive. You will see it on your eyelids when you go to sleep at night. Guide your snaky avatar around the screen, avoiding bumping into either yourself or the walls. Collect food morsels to grow bigger, with more morsels equalling more points

HOOK CHAMP: Good if you fancy yourself as a bit of an Indiana Jones. Guide Mr. Cowboy around the jungle, picking up treasure, avoiding monsters and swinging on vines to get around. While the graphics aren't amazing, it just adds to the retro value, and there's something pleasingly Mario about the way the game works.

SIM CITY: A nice quiet, relaxed game. The beauty of this one is that you can pick it up and put it down when you want, and the addictiveness of the Sims means that you can never get bored. The latest version comes with every building type imaginable, so get designing and create your own portable city.

CRAYON PHYSICS: Don't be put off by the nerdy name. This deceptively simple game involves getting a red star into a yellow triangle by drawing situations in which the two would touch; think slopes, stairs, clouds that rain stars... you get the picture. It gets tricky (and addictive), trust us.

MAZEFINGER: Does what it says on the tin. Mazefinger allows you to... well, complete mazes. Getting more complex as you go through the levels, the tension is ramped up by the fact that you're up against the clock. This one is famous for its fabulous graphics, and the fact that it marries strategy with a thrilling timed game.

MOUSE ABOUT: Absolutely the cutest game available, guide Marv the Mouse around the screen from one piece of food to the next... oh, trying to avoid the great big scary cat that chases you around while you're doing it. That's the twist.

TETRIS: You have to have Tetris. It's some sort of iPhone, gaming law. One of the oldest skill games out there, Tetris is the most addictive thing you will ever come across, as you try to line up different shaped blocks to create a straight line. This one has beautiful graphics and each level is significantly harder as you progress through the game.

None of these games take your fancy? Well, for something decidedly more adult, try a mobile casino; many of these can be downloaded directly to your phone, meaning that you will have hundreds of classic mobile casino games at the click of a button. Failing that, there's literally millions more games for your iPhone available at the App Store (after all that's the beauty of owning an iPhone).
